Mobile

Mobile VoIP, or simply mVoIP, is the latest enhancement of IP-based telephony. There are several alternatives by which your mobile phones can be configured and integrated into the VoIP network.

One mVoIP methodology converts the mobile handset into a standard Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) client. This, in turn, uses a data network in transmitting and accepting SIP messaging. It also uses the same data network in sending and receiving Real-Time Transport Protocol (RTP) for the voice path. The minimum requirement of this methodology is a mobile handset that can support high speed IP-based communications. Under this type of application, standard protocols, which is usually SIP, are used over broadband wireless network connections that are IP-capable such as WiFi, HSDPA, WiMax or EVDO rev A.

Another application that integrates mobile phones into a VoIP network is through the use of a soft switch as a gateway to bridge RTP and SIP into the SS7 infrastructure of the mobile communication network. With this methodology, mobile handsets will continue to operate as a CDMA or GSM-based mobile device, but can be controlled by servers that use SIP application in order to benefit from SIP-based services.

The success of Mobile VoIP will require a balance between mobility and economy. For instance, voice communication using WiFi is practically a free add- on premium under IP-based telephony. However, you can access this valued feature only within the specified area defined by the WiFi access point. You can also enjoy enhanced capabilities and audio qualities if you are using mobile communication networks that support HSDPA or EVDO rev A, but you will have to pay a higher rate for the service than most WiFi-based IP communication services.

Industry experts believe that mobile VoIP will be the standard of modern communication as manufacturers continue to harness less expensive memory and more powerful processors. Smartphone is one such development that points to the future of mVoIP as consumers look for more power and capabilities in their mobile handsets at the most affordable rates.
