Internet Telephony Associations

Internet telephony associations are trade groups that represent service providers, network operators and other related business interests that are engaged in the supply of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services to both business or commercial clients and residential consumers.

The primary concerns of Internet telephony associations are the promotion of fair competition and self-regulation. The major aim of these trade associations is to provide the needed support and conditions to encourage growth and development of this emerging and flourishing industry. Their primary concerns are the promotion of fair competition and self-regulation.

The Internet telephony associations were organized to present and protect the interest of stakeholders and other players in the industry. Thus, these trade groups serve as the “face” and “voice” of the industry to government regulating bodies and agencies.

Internet telephony associations assume a critical role, given the great potential and rapid growth of the VoIP industry and the complex issues affecting the conduct and regulation of their operations.  Stakeholders and other entities recognize the importance of having a full-functioning and relevant association that can protect their business interests and help achieve their goals and objectives.

Internet telephony associations are also committed to further enhance the competency and skill set of key players in the VoIP industry. Internet telephony associations must endeavor to achieve their goals in order to develop multi-media communication solutions that are genuinely global, reliable, secure and easy to use.

Study groups are supported by these organizations for the establishment of IP-based communication systems that are interoperable with current communication platforms. The main focus of these studies that are sponsored or initiated by these associations is on the achievement of integration of Internet telephony to mainstream communication systems. These studies aim to resolve critical issues such as system interoperability, pricing scheme, regulation and overall business impact.

Internet telephony associations are also actively involved in educating consumers and media on the critical issues and recent developments related to IP communication technologies. These groups are committed in providing essential information and feedback about VoIP technologies and their benefits to legislators, regulating agencies as well as other industry groups and associations.
